How to Brighten Winter Hair Blahs
Static, frizz, dryness, split ends, dullness and lifelessness are all hair problems that we combat during the winter months. The damp weather and hot dry indoor heat all do their part to wreak havoc on our tresses. So, what can you do to keep your hair looking lively and fresh even when the weather is less than desirable?
The number one factor that makes your hair look less than glamorous during the winter months is dryness. There are several things that contribute to dryness including your home's heating source and daily use of a blow dryer. Even if you live in a mild climate, you'd be surprised by how much even a little use of the furnace will dry out your hair and skin. And once your hair gets dry it can be a fright to deal with. Dry hair is limp, dull, and lifeless and can have a lot of static.
To prevent your hair from drying out, you need to change your conditioner during the winter months to one that infuses more moisture. If you already use the most intense moisturizing conditioner that your product line provides, you can still get added moisture by doing a weekly intensive conditioning treatment at home. You should also cut back on blow dryer use or at the very least apply a heat protectant to your hair before you blow dry.
Another thing that is very important to keep up during the winter months is getting your regular trim. In fact, you might want to step up your trimming schedule a bit during this time. You see, in the winter you will likely do more thermal styling such as blow drying, flat ironing and curling. In the summer, you just throw your hair up and go, but the winter allows for more creativity. All of this extra pampering results in thermal damage and split ends.
Hair color can also be a great way to add shine, body and vibrancy to hair that has seen better days. Opt for warmer tones. This will make you appear bright and lively. Stay away from drab colors. Cool colors and ultra light highlights can have a tendency to make you look even bleaker when the sun is not shining.
Remember, just because the sun has hidden its face doesn't mean that you have to. Stay on top of your beauty routine during the winter months and you will look radiant year round.
